Imagine what the world would be like if we couldn't lie? Absolutely no white lies, no sneaking around, just pure honesty at all times. At first it seems like it would be great, isn't it? No more cases of friends stabbing each other in the back or couples cheating on each other. Then, your friends would have to tell you if your outfit looked disgusting or if you had food stuck in between your teeth or your makeup made you look like a clown. They would have to tell you if you were good or bad at something. But then on the other side of things, so many of the wonders from our lives would be taken. There would never be Santa Clause, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and such. Half your childhood would not 'exist'. You could never have a surprise party or a secret gift for someone. You would have to tell your insecure friend that you don’t actually think they are beautiful. And what if you couldn't lie to yourself? What if you couldn't convince yourself that you were good at painting because you love it, and gave it up because the truth is you suck. What if you had to tell your friends that the present they got for you actually suck and you hate it? Everyone do tell lies from time to time. Many of us find ourselves telling a lie at least once in our life. Most of us feel a little bit of remorse over it and regret our actions later. Some vow to be more truthful in the future. "Once you master how to lie to yourself, you'll have no problems lying to everyone around you." In the long run, lying doesn't work. Once you are unmasked as a habitual liar, you’re owned. People will take you far less seriously as a person. Trust may be impossible to ever win back. Just stop and think.. The truth has a way of making itself known, and when you lose people’s trust, you lose the power to be heard by other people - because they’ll stop listening. Just like what happened to the story of the boy who cried "Wolf!". But for all the bad it does and harm it causes, think of all the magic and wonders it brings. Think of all the white lies and excitement. Think of all the ways you get through your day by lying to yourself about something. Think of the ways it saves lives and relationships. Not the way it buries the truth, but the way it allows us to dig up what we wished to believe. Omg, this sounds like I'm doing an Ethics assignment - Case Analysis of Lying; listing out the harms and benefits, utilizing a rule, etc.. hahahaha But nah.. This is just a pure random post. Just a piece of my thoughts. :) |
